Atmos Weather Dataset v1.0 License
Effective: October 3, 2026. This license governs your use of
the Weather Trading Intelligence dataset ("the Dataset") —
the data you retrieve via the API or download as Parquet files, under
any plan. It is versioned separately from the dataset's own
v1.0 schema version: this document is the
"Atmos Weather Dataset v1.0 License" and applies for as
long as you're using a v1.0 release of the Dataset. A future
dataset version may ship under a revised license. This License is
incorporated into, and should be read together with, the
Terms of Service.
1. License grant
Subject to your compliance with this License and the Terms of Service (including being current on any applicable subscription fees), we grant you a non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable, limited right to access and use the Dataset during your subscription, solely as described in §2 below. This is a license to use the Dataset — it is not a sale, and we retain all rights not expressly granted.
2. Permitted use
You may use the Dataset for:
- Internal research and analysis;
- Building and backtesting quantitative models and trading strategies;
- Generating trading signals and making internal commercial decisions based on those signals;
- Internal analytics, dashboards, and reporting within your own organization;
- Academic or personal, non-commercial study (Free plan).
We explicitly want you to be able to do this, even commercially:
Dataset → your research → your model → your backtest → your trading strategy → your P&L
3. Prohibited use / redistribution restrictions
You may not, without our prior written consent:
- Resell, rent, lease, or sublicense the Dataset, in raw or lightly-reformatted form, to any third party;
- Publicly publish, post, or make downloadable any substantial portion of the Dataset (e.g. re-hosting tables, bulk-posting rows, or mirroring the Parquet files);
- Use the Dataset to build, train, or operate a competing weather data product, feed, or API offered to third parties — i.e. don't repackage it as "your" dataset and sell access to it;
- Share your account credentials or API key with any other individual or organization, or use a single key on behalf of multiple separate organizations;
- Remove, obscure, or alter any attribution, provenance, version, or license metadata shipped with the Dataset.
We don't want you to do this:
Dataset → repackage → "XYZ Weather Dataset" → sell it to 500 people
4. What's allowed vs. not allowed, at a glance
| Allowed | Not allowed |
|---|---|
| Use data for internal research | Redistribute the raw dataset |
| Run backtests | Resell the dataset |
| Build internal models | Create a competing data API from the dataset |
| Generate internal trading signals | Publicly publish substantial portions of the dataset |
| Use derived statistics internally | Share account credentials or API keys |
| Use data within your own organization | Remove attribution/provenance information |
5. Derived works and outputs
We draw a clear line between the Dataset itself and what you build with it:
- The Dataset (raw and processed tables, forecast errors, revisions, probability curves, and any export of them) stays ours and remains subject to this License, however you reformat or relabel it.
- Your independently generated outputs — a model you trained, a trading signal you derived, a backtest report you wrote — are yours. We claim no ownership over your models, strategies, or trades, even when the Dataset was an input to them.
- Aggregated or derived statistics you compute (e.g. a single summary correlation number in an internal memo) may be used and shared internally; you still may not use them to reconstruct, approximate, or substantially reproduce the underlying Dataset for distribution to others.
6. Attribution
Some upstream sources require attribution when their data (or data derived from it) is displayed or redistributed outside your own organization. Where that applies (see the provenance table below), you must keep the required attribution intact — see §3's restriction on removing attribution/provenance metadata. For your own internal use (research, modeling, backtesting), no public-facing attribution is required.
7. Data provenance and upstream licenses
Our rights aren't uniform across every field in the Dataset — each upstream source carries its own terms, summarized here:
| Source | Tables / fields | Upstream license | Attribution if redistributed |
|---|---|---|---|
| NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily | weather_observations |
U.S. government work, public domain | Not legally required; citation (Menne et al. 2012) appreciated |
| NOAA / National Weather Service API | Station metadata | Public domain | Not legally required; must not imply NOAA/NWS endorsement |
| Open-Meteo (re-archived NOAA GFS model output) | weather_forecasts, forecast_errors,
forecast_revisions, probability_curves |
CC BY 4.0; commercial use of our pipeline requires Open-Meteo's commercial tier | Required wherever this data is displayed or redistributed: "Weather data by Open-Meteo.com" with a link to open-meteo.com |
| Atmos Data Labs | Point-in-time alignment, forecast-error calculations, revisions, calibrated probability curves (the processing layer) | Proprietary — licensed to you under this document | N/A (not separately redistributable per §3) |
Paid commercial access to the Open-Meteo-derived tables above is only enabled once Atmos Data Labs has an active Open-Meteo commercial license in place; see pricing for current plan availability.
8. Accuracy disclaimer
The Dataset — observations, forecasts, errors, revisions, and probability curves alike — is provided "as is", without warranty of accuracy, completeness, or fitness for a particular purpose. Forecasts and probability curves are statistical estimates, not guarantees.
9. No investment advice
The Dataset is research/data infrastructure. It is not investment advice, and using it does not create any advisory relationship between you and Atmos Data Labs.
10. Term and termination
This License runs for as long as your subscription is active. If your subscription ends (cancellation, non-payment, or termination under the Terms of Service), your right to access new data stops immediately. Copies of the Dataset you already downloaded remain subject to this License's use and redistribution restrictions (§2–§3) indefinitely — ending your subscription does not give you broader rights over data you already have.
11. Governing law
This License is governed by the laws of the Province of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein, consistent with the Terms of Service.
12. Contact
Need a redistribution right this License doesn't grant — e.g. building a product on top of the Dataset for external customers? Email contact@atmosdatalabs.com to discuss a custom license.
